Volvo Amazon retromod project

Volvo Amazon retromod project

This is my first post about this car in here. I bought this old volvo few years ago, and since then have dismantled it completely and repaired almost all rusted or damaged body. Still leaving some battle marks to show the journey it has had before.

The goal of this project is to build a fun old school style street racer with some newer technology components. Target horsepower will be around 500-600 hp at the wheels, but even if we get 450 hp to the rear wheels I will be happy. First version will enjoy the old cast iron B20 4-cylinder, with quite a big turbo slapped to it. But after it fails, there are plans for possibly building a either 2 or 3 rotor wankel to be the power house.

In the late 60´s the car didn´t have that much electronics on board. Only few were lights, few sensors and fuel pump, starter, altenator, dash and battery. Now I´m aiming to run the engine with forced induction, turbocharger and for cost effective at the start it will still be carburated, as doing triggering for ecu would take a long time and some money off from other projects. Might still do it if the engine survives one or two seasons of abuse.

Engine is currently completely dismantled and getting checked about possible polishing or grinding needs.

Valve ports profile won´t be changed that much. Only smoothen out to reduce turbulence, and head will be matched to the corresponding flanges on intake and exhaust manifolds.

Block will most likely just be freshly honed out, decks on both block and cylinder head seem to be pretty flat. Only will be doing little resurfacing for use of bronze cylinder head gasket. I will cover the modifications on both block and head on separate posts.

The body of the car will mostly stay stockish, with just moderate fender flares added,

rear wing, little diffuser and front splitter and possibly side skirts. As the car is from 1969 it won´t be needing a catalytic converter, which gives me an easy way to run downpipe straight to right side off the car and do a side pipe exhaust for this one. Most likely full exhaust will be 3,5" at first probably just regular exhaust pipe, RST maybe later. Hoping to get away without using a muffler, but we will see.

Next on this project there is finishing up the rust repairs with few more chassis patches and side skirt rust holes. Aim is to get it back on all fours by the summer. Not to be running yet but atleast be all suspenssion and brakes etc. ready for paint and engine/drivetrain to be dropped in it.
